ACDA-MN Summer Dialogue
The GREAT Minnesota Choral Get-Together!
GREAT People • GREAT Sessions • GREAT Food • GREAT Times
Join us August 6-9 as the ACDA-MN community gathers together for the 34th annual Summer Dialogue at St. Olaf College in Northfield. Thirteen reading sessions of newly released and “tried and true” titles, along with twelve relevant and engaging interest sessions targeting all levels of teaching, have been planned by conference chair and ACDA-MN President Paula Holmberg. Evening afterglows have been scheduled in some of Northfield’s most popular social establishments. Again this year… Beer Choir (version 2.0) scheduled for Thursday night at the Tanzenwald Brewery.

ACDA-MN Honor Choirs
Inspiring New Generations For Excellence
Thanks to the hundreds of ACDA-MN members who mentored their student singers through the state honor choir audition program. In 2018-19, more schools, more directors, and more selected singers participated in the SEVEN honor choirs.
- 4-5-6 BOYS: 178 auditions; 120 selected
- 4-5-6 GIRLS: 410 auditions; 150 selected
- 7-8 TTB: 239 auditions; 150 selected
- 7-8 SSA: 450 auditions; 150 selected
- 9-10 HIGH SCHOOL: 1054 auditions; 140 each selected in SSAA and SATB; 120 selected in TBB
TOTAL: 2331 auditions; 970 selected
Also a BIG thanks to the ACDA-MN members who accepted the invitation to be audition screeners throughout the past school year. Screeners represented all singing levels and represented all geographic districts in the state.

2019 State Conference
Andre Thomas, Headliner!
Check your calendars now for the weekend of November 15 & 16, as ACDA-MN makes plans to produce the annual State Conference located at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church in Mahtomedi. Over twenty interest sessions targeting our membership who direct choirs at the elementary, middle school, high school, college/university, church, community and professional levels will be programmed.
As a special feature of the State Conference weekend, ACDA-MN will welcome renowned choral conductor, composer, clinician and our ACDA national President-Elect, Andre Thomas. Dr. Thomas will headline several major events during his one-week Minnesota residency co-sponsored by VocalEssence.
THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 14 – Urban Initiatives High School Choral Festival
Augsburg University, Minneapolis
Featuring three urban high school choirs:
- Minneapolis South High School – Laurie Meyers, conductor
- Open World Learning Academy (St. Paul) – Alex Ferderer, conductor
- VocalEssence Singers of this Age (SOTA) – G. Phillip Shoultz III, conductor
- (and) 15 SATB quartets from urban Minneapolis and St. Paul public schools
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 15 – Star of the North High School Choral Festival
Trinity Lutheran Church, Stillwater & St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, Mahtomedi
Featuring three auditioned high school choirs:
- Choir 1
- Choir 2
- Choir 3
At 8:00 pm, all six Thursday and Friday festival choirs plus SATB quartets will appear in a combined festival concert led by Dr. Thomas at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church in Mahtomedi, the site of the annual state conference weekend.
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 16 – Collegiate Choral Festival • Way Over Beulah Land
Trinity Lutheran Church, Stillwater & St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, Mahtomedi
Featuring four invited collegiate/university choirs:
- Minnesota State University-Moorhead – Erynn Millard, conductor
- St. Olaf College Chapel Choir – Tesfa Wondemagegnehu, conductor
- University of Minnesota-Duluth – Richard Robbins, conductor
- University of St. Thomas, St. Paul – Angela Broeker, conductor
In addition to these three choral festivals, Dr. Thomas will deliver a headlining keynote session couched as a conducting masterclass for ALL conference registrants, scheduled on Friday, 9:00-10:30 am. Several Minnesota conductors will be selected to conduct one of their favorite pieces with the conference registrants serving as the choir. More details on this unique program feature to be announced at a later date.
Concluding his Minnesota residency on Sunday afternoon, November 17, Andre Thomas will conduct a full performance of his newest major work entitled: Mass: A Celebration of Life and Joy at Orchestra Hall with the full VocalEssence Chorus and orchestra.
Conference Chair and ACDA-MN President-Elect Diane Heaney has again spearheaded a new and innovative way to involve choirs representing all seven districts of the state. This past winter, each District Chair was given the charge to personally invite choirs to appear on the conference performance schedule. The result is a fascinating celebration of a diverse group of conductors who have inspired their students to excellence in performance from all geographic corners of the state.

The Advocate for Choral Excellence (ACE) Award is offered annually to Minnesota community citizens who make a difference by their advocacy and support for choral music in their communities.
Since 2008, awards have been presented to administrators, community choral directors, church choir directors, accompanists, piano instructors, school board members, parent booster clubs and organizations, parent volunteers, arts advocates, community organizers, music store vendors, and ACDA colleagues.
