We are grateful to again receive a grant from the Twin Cities Opera Guild for Honor Choir scholarship support. The funding allows us to offer additional scholarships for participating students.

Additionally we are thrilled to share that ACDA-MN received an Arts Learning grant for $24,912 from the Minnesota State Arts Board to support the Tenor-Bass Festival on March 11, 2024. In partnership with Cantus, this new event will be held at St. Michael-Albertville High School.

Throughout these many years, the FMC Endowment Fund has expanded its support to our Minnesota choral music community by providing scholarships for members to attend graduate school, attend professional development conferences, support a needs-based state honor choir scholarship program, and support and encourage young music students to pursue choral conducting as a career. A new transportation grant program was launched in 2021 to assist choirs to perform in the annual ACDA-MN state conference, and beginning in 2023, the IDEA Fund has begun to support people and programs that are making choral music more equitable and inclusive. In addition, the fund provides considerable financial assistance to the ACDA-MN general budget that considerably reduces registration rates for Summer Dialogue and State Conference, and further supports a portion of the salary for the Executive Director and Director of Development.

When did you make your first donation to ACDA-MN?

I can’t even remember when I made my first donation to ACDA-MN. I have been a part of this great organization since 1988 when my husband and I moved back from Kentucky for my “new” position at St. Paul Academy and Summit School. I just retired a year ago from SPA after directing the choirs there for almost 35 years. I remember going to a meeting in Mankato when Steve Boehlke was President, and shared with him that I was very interested in being part of the leadership of ACDA-MN. I felt strongly about the need to give back to a professional organization that is so supportive and encouraging to its members. There is a strong camaraderie that uplifts all of the directors – Elementary, Middle School, High School, Collegiate, Church and Community Choirs – to strive for their best in bringing out the best in their singers. So, that’s why I remained the Secretary for over 14 years, recording and writing all of those minutes for those important board meetings! Plus, it was another chance to have fellowship with my colleagues.

Why is it so important for you to contribute to ACDA-MN?

I so strongly believe in the mission statement of ACDA-MN. Because of the life-changing choral experiences I had while in high school, college and post-college, I want more singers to experience that same joy of singing that can affect their lives with a deeper understanding of the power of singing together, and be a part of their musical experiences throughout their lives. Although quoted too many times – “Music is the universal language” is very true. And the bond that is created when a group of singers creates magic with their voices together is indescribable. I dare say that the singers get more out of the performances than the audience. I can’t think of a better example of community than a group of people coming together to sing and experience the joy it brings from a job well done.

What is one part of ACDA-MN’s future that excites you?

I am excited that ACDA-MN continues to move forward and thrive. That mission that I believed in way back in the 1980s is basically the same mission as today – to bring the joy of singing to as many people as are able; to come together and create incredible music and programs. Things change throughout the years, and financial demands change as well. I am so impressed with how ACDA-MN continues to evaluate their goals, and how we as a professional musical organization strive to keep the doors open for new and innovative choral opportunities throughout the state. I know my high school choral experience opened the doors for my professional career. And I am confident that ACDA-MN will continue to look for more creative ways to make the choral experience an opportunity for all who choose to partake.
