Carol Alice Murray, age 85, of Minneapolis, passed away on December 28, 2023. Born and raised in Duluth, she graduated from Denfeld High School in 1956. She accompanied a choral performance of Handel’s “Messiah” on piano at age 13, and at 15 on organ, which led to her first church organist position at First Presbyterian Church where she met Leonard, the love of her life. Following their marriage in 1957, they moved to Minneapolis where Carol became the organist at Park Avenue Methodist Church, completed her education at the University of Minnesota, and accompanied the Minneapolis Choralaires.

Carol’s music career included 45 years in church music as organist and choir director. In addition, she taught music education in elementary grades through college, accompanied numerous soloists and choirs, and wrote, arranged and published over 50 choral anthems.

As a member of Mt. Olivet Lutheran’s Music Staff, she directed music at Mt. Olivet’s Cathedral of the Pines, where her sons enjoyed seven summers. She was also Director of Music Education for Schmitt Music Company for 4 years. Following their move to Edina, Carol organized, directed and accompanied the Edina Songsters, a choir of 40 talented young people. She served as Director of Music and Organist for Minnetonka Lutheran Church from 1991 until her retirement in 2006.

Carol thoroughly enjoyed entertaining friends and family, and hosted her private piano students recitals in her home. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, sister, two sons, and five grandchildren. A memorial service was held on Thursday, January 18th at Mt. Olivet Lutheran Church in Minneapolis with memorials preferred to Mt. Olivet Careview Home Therapeutic Recreation Dept., or Mt. Olivet Lutheran Church.
