I am the director of the adult choir, “The Hosanna Choir”, at St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Bloomington, MN. I’ve been a part of the music staff at St. Stephen for 13 years. I’m here today to introduce and honor Nancy Gubrud for her nearly 40 years of service at St. Stephen as the accompanist to the Youth Choir program.

In 1985, Nancy began accompanying the Youth Choirs at St. Stephen. Those choirs include:

  • Jubilation (the middle & high school)
  • Choristers (the elementary school)
  • Thy Little Ones (the pre-school)

Nancy (along with her partner in crime, Linda Olson, the director of the youth choir program at St. Stephen) rehearsed these choirs at their weekly rehearsals, and accompanied them when they would sing at church services (which is about once or twice a month). She also brought her phenomenal accompanying skills on every tour the youth choirs took, including their annual Summer tour, performing “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”, which has taken them all over the country.

When Nancy retired from her position at St. Stephen, she had served our church’s community for 38 years. It was at that time that I became aware that Nancy had NEVER taken a salary, insisting, instead, as working as a volunteer.

So, Nancy, it is my honor to present you with the ACDA of Minnesota Metro East Division “Advocate of Choral Excellence” award! In your time at St. Stephen, you touched the lives, and hearts, of thousands of young musicians. Their lives are richer because of the time, talent, and love for music that you have given to the St. Stephen community, and as a result, the greater musical community of Minnesota is better off, specifically, because of people like you.

Congratulations, Nancy!
